Plan basement access from the inside out

A basement project can start with a floor, a door opening or stairs to the yard. Each changes how you use the space. Tell us whether you need new concrete, a cut in an existing wall or a way to reach an outside door.

Before cutting a basement wall, have the opening and any support needs checked as part of your plans. Outside, think about the landing, steps and water near the door. A hole in the wall is only one part of the job.

Provo's city portal has paths for building permits and for public-works or joint-use permits. If the work reaches city property or affects public infrastructure, ask which permit path applies. A private basement job and work beside a public sidewalk may need different reviews.

Provo also publishes zoning information. Check your parcel with the city's Planning team before an addition or a change in how the property is used. Concrete work does not by itself approve a new use of a basement or yard.

For a floor project, note posts, plumbing and anything already fixed to the slab. For an opening, show where it should meet the room inside. Share drawings if you have them. This keeps the estimate tied to your actual basement rather than a picture of a different home's layout.
