Plan the path from the street to your home

A cracked front walk or worn steps can make the trip to your door hard. A replacement driveway, new steps or a clear walkway may be part of your plan. We look at how those pieces meet before we price the work.

For an addition, the new footings need to fit the house plans. For a basement door, think about the landing and the path back to the yard. Tell us what you want to change, not just the size of the concrete.

Work near the street needs a separate check. Salt Lake City has public-way permits for work that affects streets, sidewalks, alleys, curbs and driveway approaches. A driveway on your lot and an approach at the curb may need different approvals.

If the job involves digging in the street, check the city's excavation-restriction map. Don't assume a street can be opened just because the concrete on your lot is ready. Leave room in the plan for city review and access to your home.

Draw the route a person takes from the sidewalk to your porch. Note each step, turn and narrow spot. If you want to move that route, show us both the old path and the new one. That helps keep a front-entry project focused on the way you use your home.

What to check at your home

Check with Salt Lake City about permits

Check with Salt Lake City Building Services before work starts. Ask whether your job needs a building permit, a public-way permit or both. The answer depends on the work and the property.
